Today’s lesson is our first time as teachers. Honestly, the first class was not as easy as we had thought. We anticipated all students who enrolled in advanced grammar to join our grammar lab. However, we were surprised by less participation, which makes our introduction part kind of difficult to process. In fact, we tried to avoid nominating students directly instead of using the name wheel to call on students randomly and comfortably. Unfortunately, students picked by name wheel did not show up in class, so we had to delete names in the spinning wheel. It took us more time to organize this introduction part, I decided to give up that spinning name way and picked up students who attended our class.
After the introduction from students one by one, we wanted our students to get to know us by telling two lies and one truth. We asked students to question to verify our truth covered by two lies, and we had a little tense review of those sentences given in the slides. Students are not engaged that much, and they hardly ask us. It is more like a former tense review rather than getting to know each other. I think we should change the order of introductions between teachers and students. We let students introduce themselves first might make them feel uncomfortable because we literally are strangers to them.
As to teaching content, we had a matching game to let students quickly review verb tense and its form. Besides, we separated students for group work by asking them to line up in order of birthday and displaying the verb tenses each group assigned, giving instructions of creating sentences. The problem we met in this section is that students are unfamiliar with joining breakout rooms. What I would like to say here is that Sarah explained and organized for students very well. We brought them back and shared their sentences with the whole class with a few corrections.
Overall, we were so surprised by our first class, but what we realized is that there is inadequate preparation of being interactive with students.
