Philosophy of Teaching Statement
My philosophy of teaching has been growing based on my lenses as both learner, tutor, and teacher respectively. From a learner’s perspective, I have strong empathy for English as a second language learner. I have been there, and I can completely know what they are going through when learning English. It has been profoundly affecting me to realize how important is to create a warm and friendly learning environment for those students. As for a tutor, I guarantee to point out the grammar errors students made and share my English learning experiences with them. I am responsible to make them notice which they need to improve and put mistakes to rights. This role benefits me to aware that it is significant to provide valuable feedback to students. From the viewpoint of a teacher, I am conscious that students prefer to receive education from an authorial and knowledgeable teacher. According to that, I perceive that being professional is a key to success in the curriculum of teaching English. Consequently, teaching and learning are long-life proceedings. As teachers, what we need to do is to never stop learning and innovating to cater to students’ learning needs. In the following, I would like to explain more about three main points that I have gained from my developing philosophy of teaching.
Establishment of Learning Environment. To build a warm and friendly learning environment, we should consider the atmosphere and discipline. The atmosphere derives from the good relationship between teachers and students and the attractive lesson setting. Thus, the first step is to form a good rapport with students. The first class is a perfectly efficient chance to shorten the distance between teachers and students. When students have a basic understanding of you, they tend to be more comfortable and less defensive to communicate with you. What you also need to do is maintaining this positive relationship with students. For example, you can grow some small talk with students and care about students why they absent in class. Besides, an interesting and attractive lesson plan can also increase the points that students are well-disposed. For reaching that, we need to grasp relevant information about our students, such as nationality and preference. Expect running class atmosphere, setting up rules is necessary before the class is officially beginning. Then, the student will have a clear picture that what they need to do to collaborate with the teacher in class and what they should do to get a pass. It should be mandatory. Overall, creating a warm and friendly learning environment is a win-win for both teachers and students. Students are freer to speak out in class, and teachers do not get discouraged when students are not engaged or even absent from class.
Provider of Feedback. Assessment and Feedback are complementary in process of teaching. Before providing feedback for students, assessing is of essence and indispensable. As a teacher, you will have a clear lesson plan if you know the student’s learning background. It will also facilitate you to design and create well-prepared materials for class. During the teaching process, it is of importance to master students’ learning situation as a whole in certain stages. Teachers will know what a student’s weakness is in academic performance and how to assist the student to improve. Another significant function is a provider of feedback. I consider that it correlates to assessment, which helps the teacher find the source of the student’s problem and help them to solve it. Providing feedback to students can help them distinguish what is right or wrong. It can enlighten students to keep in the right direction of learning. If teachers deucedly encourage students without pointing out what they do wrong, the student will never make huge progress. Also, I do not agree with overcorrection to students. Additionally, we had better pay attention to students’ mental health. We need to help them to establish confidence and foster interests in English learning. Hence, I suppose that we need to find a balance between rectification and encouragement.
Professionalism. Being professional as a teacher is unquestioned. The first thing we need to implement is being strict with ourselves at first. The teacher has its vulnerability. We need to alert that we are far from being perfect to teach students. Accepting our dearth and scarcity is the first step. After that, we have an unambiguous location that we have to build our professional knowledge and teaching ability stronger and stronger. Accordingly, we define ourselves as lifelong learners. We should maser our professional knowledge that is essential and constantly improve teaching ability. The regular seminar is a good way to help teachers exchange ideas and experience with peers to develop our professionalism. Another thing is to be responsible for students. Prior to teaching students, we assure that the materials we supplied are agreeable and congruent for our students. For example, if we teach English grammar to them, we ensure that there are no grammar errors in slides and worksheets we offered before teaching. It is vital to display the teacher’s professionalism. Nothing is important than gaining acceptance and trust from students during teaching, which also assists students to attend class and acquire knowledge voluntarily.
In conclusion, the aforementioned three main points I have learned advantage me to develop good quality teachers should have. I will keep it in my mind and collect more in my future teaching journey. Being confident and employing my cultural background, which will help me to intergrade English teaching in the incoming days.
