Today I observed Alex’s live class, Academic Reading Skill provided by Thompson Rivers University. The class is mainly for international students who are level 5 with a strong background in English grammar and wide vocabulary. Before beginning the class, Alex told students that they were going to have some guests today ahead of time. After the introduction, Alex asked the student if they know what TESL meant. This is a good way to catch the student’s attention and invite them to participate. The teacher facilitated students for English Learning by providing PowerPoint and giving a clear explanation for today’s agenda and content. In the teaching process, the teacher nominated students to define the literary terms the teacher offered by PowerPoint. Meanwhile, the teacher gave examples and explain them in detail. I feel the rate of delivery is clear and articulate, and it is easy to follow and understand. In the process of teaching delivery, students kept asking some terms they got confused. Teaching gave examples from movies, realia, and reading text they read before. As I can see, students were pretty engaged by asking questions through unmuting themselves and typing in the chatbox. The outstanding quality teacher has is super patient and well-prepared. The teacher kept explaining again and again when some students had overlap questions. And she always can find a way to let students understand well by giving an easier way to explain for different students. The challenge is that some students are reluctant to elaborate more when the teacher is trying to elicit them. Also, some of them prefer to type an answer in the chatbox. It will not facilitate the time of the teaching process but at least students are engaged in this way. What I will take away from the observation is to be more patient with students and try to find an easier way for them to understand my teaching delivery.
